Customer Reviews on Emergency Kits Gerber 31-000701 Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Kit
Ultimate Survival System For Non-Outdoorsmen, February 7, 2012

I'm not much of an outdoorsman, primarily because I have this belief that almost anything that exists in the wild has the sole objective of stalking me, killing me, and eating me in a horribly painful and drawn out fashion. I also don't like being in the sun for too long, nor do I enjoy temperature fluctuations to any extreme degree. My sense of direction is atrocious, to a point that if I were to walk my dog into the 1000 square feet of forest behind my apartments, I would have to rely on her to find our way back home, or hope that I happen to come across a fellow dog walker who could guide me. When I am more than five miles from the nearest gas station, I start to panic because if I run out of fuel, I'm not sure my office-chair-weakened-legs could handle the collective ten mile hike to the gas station and back, half of which I'll be forced to carry two gallons of gasoline. My fingers hurt after carrying milk up a flight of stairs to my apartment, so I'm sure you can understand my concern.

Naturally, for a person in my situation, it made sense for me to find a survival kit that would essentially solve all my problems if I were stuck out in the wild after a plane-crash or a long night of heavy inebriation surrounded by bad friends that would find it funny to dump me in the middle of a swamp and see how I faired. It's always a good idea to be prepared for everything. So, I started looking for a kit to help ensure my survival for the 45 minute window between me calling the national guard and their arrival at my location thanks to cellphone triangulation.

When I saw the Gerber 31-000701 Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Kit, I was immediately intrigued for a number of reasons. With my lack of environmental training skills, I had to make my assessment based on factors that I assumed would be relevant in the middle of nowhere. The first thing that caught my eye was the Gerber title. I knew nothing about Gerber products, but being a rational thinker, I knew that Gerber Baby Foods had been running a GerberLife life insurance campaign for babies. This means that Gerber clearly has something invested in the continued survival of babies because life insurance is all about keeping people alive long enough that you don't have to pay out for their untimely death. That made me feel pretty confident.

Then there was the 31-000701 bit. I'm not good with product numbers, but then I automatically assumed that this was the 31st edition in its 701st round of production. Those seemed like pretty good numbers to me. This product has gone through 31 different versions, giving it plenty of time for field testing. I'm assuming that after the research had come back on all the people that failed to survive using this kit in editions 1-30, Gerber must have worked out most of the kinks for round 31. The fact that they have produced 701 separate batches of this product seemed promising to me as well, but what was more promising was that they left enough space in the numbering system to produce 999,999 batches! That's a high aspiration for any survival kit, and that was enough to sell me right there.

The next part that really caught my eye was the Bear Grylls name. Now I've seen his show a few times, and I have to say I'm not a fan. But don't let that discourage anyone! There are two important factors involved here that most people would simply glance over. First, "Bear." That's a heck of a name. Bears are exactly the reason I don't like going out into the wild. They will hunt you, kill you, and eat you, most likely from the feet up to your head so that it's more painful. Bears are mean like that. Second, Bear Grylls is absolutely and completely insane. The guy puts up in a hotel by night, then goes out into the wild for a day of filming just to get naked, drink his own urine, and eat a few bugs. That guy is nuts! I don't usually trust crazy people to keep me alive, but this guy lives off a diet of his own pee and what I can only assume are deadly poisonous insects. And he does all this naked! That's what I call a survivor.

Finally, there was the Survival Series Ultimate Kit. Survival was what I was looking for, and it was right there in the title. This isn't the "Near Survival Series" or the "Hopeful Survival Series." This is the guaranteed straight-up Survival Series. How can that be better? Well, it's the Ultimate Kit. It just screams continued existence in threatening situations.

Obviously, I purchased this kit and waited intently for it to arrive. When it did, I put it aside and never touched it again. I was going to put it in my car just incase I drove off a cliff or ended up in the Land of the Lost, but something was on the TV and I was pretty tired. It's also important to note that the kit doesn't contain any urine purification systems or any tools effective enough to remove the poison glands from deadly insects before you eat them. I'm considering both those things a win.

I am still alive today as I write this review. Things are looking up, and thanks to all the little nick-nacks that came in the packaging, I have even less intention of wandering out into the wild anytime soon. I can only assume that my survival is thanks to the Gerber 31-000701 Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Kit, and my complete lack of desire to ever use it.

This thing is great, July 2, 2011

I ordered this thinking it would be much smaller, even after reading reviews saying it was bigger than it looked in the picture. It is HUGE. I have not used it yet, but if you are going to buy it to use in a small tent, you may want to look at a different item. I bought it to use in my pop-up camper, so I am thrilled that it is so large. It has a really roomy bottom shelf that can be used for towels, clothes, hats, jackets, etc; just about anything. The other 2 shelves will be great for organizing smaller camping items, and the little things that always get lost in my camper. Good quality. Well made. Recommend!

Customer Reviews on Campsite Cooking and Eating Coleman Aluminum Mess Kit For Camping
This Lightweight Kit Is Supposed To Be Thin, April 18, 2012
By Fred Anonymous Smith (Central Europe)

This is an ultra lightweight, individual, field mess kit for backpackers and similar. The design been around for decades (have used a few over several of those decades), popular because it offers more than the traditional Army individual mess kit. Despite it's apparent "thin & flimsy" construction, it will last for years with only moderate care and maintenance. Dents, small scratches, and scorch marks can be tapped or buffed out. Bent handles can simply be forced back into place (notice none here have said the handles fall or break off). In the end, this kit supposed to be basic & functional, not comprehensive & pretty.

Cooking in the field requires experience and skill. It's not the same as cooking on the stove at home. Temperatures should be lower (coals, not flames). With this kit, each camper cooks their own meals (with their own kit), with individual portions instead of group portions. Heavy foods should be cooked with spits or skewers, not these lightweight containers. The pots & pans should be supported on something when force is applied. Most just eat directly from the pots & pans after cooking. Tote an aluminum coffee pot if that, cocoa, or hot tea is desired. Millions over the years (including me) have done all this and it works.

ice piece for a BOB or Car kit., March 2, 2012

This is an excellent little lantern. I bought it for my emergency car kit. Tested it, nice and bright. It is very compact and lightweight so I'll be ordering a second one for my BOB. It comes with 3 AA batteries that I will replace with better quality batteries. I keep my EDC and BOB lights to AA or AAA batteries as extras are light weight and I don't have to carry a bunch of different size batteried in my bags. A nice piece of kit. If anyone has rigged up a sheath or storage case for it, I love some ideas on how you managed it.

Customer Reviews on Portable Folding Hammock
Best Bang for the Buck April 8, 2011

I love hammocks but we simply didn't have the necessary tree arrangement to have a traditional one. I started researching stand alone hammocks and was dismayed when I realized I was going to be spending easily $200-300 for just the stand! As beautiful as they were, I was looking to spend much less. I just wanted to be able to lay out in our backyard with a good book on a nice day. These portable folding hammocks were my next option, and this is by far the best one I've found for the price.

Other similar products are more like camping cots. This one actually swings like a proper hammock. I ordered two of these directly from SportsmanGuide and had no problems. It was on backorder but came in much sooner than anticipated! Shipping was very reasonable considering the odd shape and weight. It was very easy to set up, and feels sturdy. It doesn't require any brute force, back breaking, or sweat to set up/take apart. Anyone (not just strong men!) can easily break it down and have it ready to carry off in less than one minute, and then have it set up and ready to rock again in another minute. It may not have the attractiveness of some of the stand alone hammocks, but the portability is great! We actually have one set up inside the house and everyone loves it! It's very comfortable, and the mesh keeps it cool in the summer. I can't imagine going on any future camping trips without it. (Note: There is a product video on the SportsmanGuide website. I'm mentioning it because it helped me in my purchasing decision.)

Problems I've Come Across:
The first time we set them up, we needed a bit of force, but after that it became ridiculously easy. One of the four holes where the locking pegs are inserted is slightly misaligned. I don't know if it's just ours, but both the units I ordered had this problem. It made the initial set up a little harder, but once we got the peg through once, we didn't have any trouble from it again. Also, if you happen to be very light like me (<100lbs), you might not "sink in" nearly as much so that the hammock lays flatter and doesn't curl around your body. This will require you to have a bit more finesse in order to stay balanced if you shift around. Also the zipper broke on one of the carry bags as we pulled it out of the packaging box. Admittedly we were a little too excited and probably didn't pull it out very gently, but be aware it's not the sturdiest zipper. :)

Customer Reviews on Coleman Camping Coffee Maker
Just like at home, November 16, 2011
By Jessica (United States)

We go camping quite a bit, but the biggest challenge every year is the big, fat annual camping trip that we go on with a large group of 24+ childhood friends. And every year, I run the camp kitchen. You try making coffee for 24 severely hungover adults with a percolator that barely boils two cups of coffee over a fire in twenty minutes and see how long YOU last! This year, I broke down from the "cook everything on the fire" rule and purchased this coffeemaker for the stove.

When first using it, one might think it will slide right off the propane stove grill, but it does stay up there pretty securely, and the best part? It brews hella fast. Takes less than ten minutes, no percolating, no boiling, it just brews like you plugged it into a wall. We made four pots of coffee within thirty minutes and everyone was happy, not too strong, not too hot, just good ol' coffee. Oh, and because there is NO information anywhere, it's a basket filter. Cleans up nice and cools off quick too. I'll be taking this ANYWHERE there is no electricity!

Instead, the Coleman coffeemaker sits atop a Coleman two- or three-burner camping stove, where it draws all the heat it needs to brew a delicious pot. The unit includes all the standard coffeemaker features, including a swing-out filter basket, a solid steel base, and an easy-pour decanter. The coffeemaker even offers a pause-and-serve feature, so you can interrupt the brew to pour a cup--a must for sleepy-eyed campers. The Coleman camping coffeemaker brews a full pot in roughly 10 minutes, and can be used for tea or hot chocolate as well.

My wife and I now do a lot of 'civilized' car camping. I have spent a lifetime mountaineering/adventure hiking, and using everything from tin cans and up, to cook in and eat out of. This item caught my eye and I had to have it. Received item quickly and it is very very nice. Heavy gauge, excellent finish, and very attractive. Can now retire all our mismatched plates, cups & flatware, and have a nice tidy set of matched dishes. These will look pretty sharp on our camp dining table.

MOST AWESOME LANTERN EVER, January 22, 2012

Just got back from camping out at Tyler State Park in Texas and this lamp was AWESOME. The whole group of 9 that went on the trip found the lantern useful, by taking a rechargeable panel to go use the restroom, or go grab a beer from the cooler, or grabbing something from the tent, etc. Just one panel alone is enough to light up a large space, and defintely more then enough light for inside the tent.

i am buying another one cuz I loved it so much.

Great to have around!, February 4, 2012
By Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States)

These rugged, heavy-duty electrical lanterns are just the ticket during power outages. We originally bought one for use on our boat. We get power outages once or twice a year though, and we discovered that there is nothing better to have on hand for such occasions than this lantern. They are very frugal of battery power and have many hours of illumination per set. We have since bought several for use during outages. These lanterns are built tough and should last a lifetime. Recommended. RJB.
